THE BREWSTER BUILDING...

Holy real estate heaven... to bring you up to speed I'm currently in the process of apartment hunting ... this will now be my second time ever in my life looking for an apartment... but this time I'm going to do it right.... When I first moved to Chicago I kinda had to rush into the first place I found and never really took into account what area of town I wanted live in or what places were worth ... but now I'm a little wiser and have a lot more time and demands... well they aren't unrealistic demands ... I just want a place where I won't get robbed or raped ..a nice clean safe space ... and on the crazy cheap... so whats the first place I look at .... The Brewster Building ... Yeah I went to the top of mountain before ever looking in the village... this building is not only a historic Chicago architectural landmark.. but it was also used for the filming of Child's Play... yeah I know I'm not even done yet... and was also the place where Charlie Chaplin once lived.. I was madly in love before I even arrived for my appointment today to look at the unit for rent... but once I walked into the lobby and got into the cast iron elevator that had to be operated by a door man and walked down the glass block lined hallways surrounded by the warm light from the huge skylights tens of floors above me ...I was ready to sign whatever they wanted and write whatever check they needed...but then when I walked into the actual apartment.. I kinda had to go ooh shit... and not in a good way..... it was kinda depressing..small... old ..dirty and the view from the one exterior window was ..well.. it was kinda more depressing than the apartment itself...and the only other window faces into the hallway ...the place needs much more than a coat of paint... we're talking about redoing kitchen floors ...a closet railing system.. and about 10 people cleaning simultaneously... it wasn't too horrible as you can see from the pictures but it was not at all what I had was expecting from the walk up ... and then when "Eddie" (I like how I say it like that's not his real name..) told me the price and everything that wasn't included.. I had another oooh shit moment ...it wasn't that bad of a number but definitely not the price I thought going in there... its doable if there is room for negotiation... but am I forcing the will to want this place based on its prime area and it being beautifully dark romantic building? Am I just turned on by the real estate of it all... gettin the in on a desirable location... ? I just don't know...
